Event : Danzas de panama
Date : 18 January 2009
Time : 3:30 PM
In collaboration with our affiliate historic organization, Cordillero del Norte, La Senora is pleased to alert you to this week's SM Symphony program featuring the music of William Grant Still who was the first African American to conduct a white radio orchestra in New York, and his appearance before the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 1936 marked the first time an African American had conducted a major orchestra. His Danzas de Panama, first performed in 1948, is based on Panamian folk themes collected by Elizabeth Waldo. In her program notes for the premiere, she explains their probable lineage: "The first and last of these dances are Negro in origin, probably brought by the first slaves imported into Panama. The Mejorana and Punto are both of Spanish derivation with Indian influence." Even more directly than in his Afro-American Symphony, then, this work blends idioms reflective of Still's own mixed-race background, which included Native American along with African and European roots. Admission is free. Be sure to arrive early to secure a seat.

Event : Santa Barbara Presidio - Search for Yesterday
Date : 30 January 2009
Time : 8:00-6:00
El Presidio de Santa Barbara State Historic Park is the site of the oldest building in Santa Barbara and the second oldest in California. Visitors to El Presidio need to take a step back and view this historic site surrounded by modern buildings, most thankfully built in the complimentary style that is so typical of Santa Barbara.
Our Docent for this Field Trip is Michael Hardwick, the Archeologist for the Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation. Mike will help us to envision the original scale of the quadrangle as can be seen from the original and restored structures. El Cuartel, the oldest existing building in Santa Barbara, is all that remains of the last of four Royal Presidios (Spanish military outposts) built in Alta California. Built in 1782, it served as the military and government headquarters for the lands between Los Angeles and San Luis Obispo until 1846.      It was to this Presidio that a young soldier named Francisco Reyes reported for duty in 1771 and lived to become the founding father of Rancho Boca de Santa Monica’s  Marquez/Reyes families..
It is within the Presidio, in a plot of land next to the original Commandante’s headquarters, that we will first see the dogs who are coming to our Marquez Family Cemetery on Saturday. Today the animals from the Institute for Canine Forensics are taking a second look at the Presidio grounds to identify additional potential sites of human remains. After watching them work, we will adjourn for lunch at an outdoor café across from the Presidio.
After lunch we will be treated to a private tour of the historic de la Guerra family’s  residence. Casa de la Guerra is in every way unusual. Built during a time when the average home was a one or two room adobe, this was the extraordinarily large home of an affluent family of great influence in the community; it remains sizeable even by today’s standards. Built by the fifth Commandante of the Presidio, the family lived in this home between 1828-1858 during which time the Casa was the social, political, military and cultural center of the pueblo of Santa Barbara. The original Court House was built across from its courtyard. It was the scene of the Fiesta. Don de la Guerra was the “Patron” of the Pueblo. For more info see:  http://www.sbthp.org/casa.htm
And it wouldn’t be a La Senora field trip if you didn’t learn about the town’s Patron Saint. Saint Barbara was the daughter of a Pagan, Roman father who was unrelenting in his persecution of Christians….including his 17 year old daughter. After locking her in a tower and even torturing her, he killed her for her beliefs.  There is a legend that a lightning bolt then struck down her persecutor (father), so she became known as the patron saint of times of danger from thunderstorms, lightning, fires, and sudden death.  Over the centuries, cannoneers and artillerymen have also claimed her has their patron saint. Santa Barbara was formed on her Saint’s Day.

Event : Leo Carrillo Rancho Carlsbad
Date : 28 February 2009
Time : 8::00 AM - 5:00 PM
History of Leo Carrillo Ranch, a former working ranchero, once owned by Leo Carrillo. It is a place that rejuvenates your spirit as you leisurely follow the trails and experience the buildings and landscape of what remains of the ranch. Even short visits provide the opportunities to understand, to appreciate, to respect the dreams Leo had for this place.
The ranch itself is secluded within the mature tropical and native landscape of a broad coastal canyon. It served as a retreat to actor, philanthropist, poet, preservationist, and rancher, Leo Carrillo from 1937 to 1961.
Situated approximately 35 miles north of the city of San Diego on the Pacific Coast, Los Quiotes provides an exceptional opportunity for visitors to discover and explore the history of the native peoples of the region, Spanish Colonial exploration and settlement in Alta California, Mexican and American Period Ranching, and the life, times, and significant contributions of Leo Carrillo and his family
Municipally owned and managed, Los Quiotes is a 27 acre historic park which contains and protects many of the original historic structures and outbuildings associated with Leo Carrillo's tenure and use of the Ranch--hacienda (main house wing and bedroom complex), wash house, Deedie's House, tack and feed house, carriage house, cantina, stable, hay barn, caretaker's house and garage, swiming pool and cabaña, foundry and equipment shed, water tank, and other auxiliary structures including bridges, walls, fences, windmills and a stone weir dam.
Constructed in a fusion of Spanish colonial, Southwestern, and California Rancho styles, it is likely that the design of the hacienda was derived at least in part by the designs of architect Cliff May, and his Ranch Homes that were immensely popular in the 1930s. A photograph of Carrillo's stable complex is featured in the 1958 first edition of Western Ranch Houses. The choice of architecture was inspired from his many visits to his great-uncle's Santa Monica rancho, and his fond childhood memories. For Carrillo, the style represented a tangible connection to his proud Spanish ancestry, and reinforced his image as a real vaquero (cowboy).

The calendars were a favorite gift from businesses to their customers and were overprinted with company names, advertising slogans and contact details. They sold everything from cigars, to beer, to soap.
The Mexicanidad School of Art, from which these collectibles are drawn, was heavily influenced by Jose Vasconcelos, the early 20's Mexico Minister of Education, who sought to broaden the reach of Mexico's culture and customs. This School of Art was most feverently embraced by Frida Kahlo, the topic of one of La Senora's historical lectures during our 2008 Season.

A TICKET TO TOMAHAWK
Released May 19, 1950

A Ticket to Tomahawk has sometimes been described as a musical western satire, but in fact is more "straight" western than anything else-- Dan Dailey plays a traveling medicine show entrepreneur who comes to the aid of fast-shootin' Anne Baxter, daughter of a railroad man. Stagecoach line representative Rory Calhoun is doing everything he can to prevent a new train service from winning a Colorado territory franchise. The whole affair boils down to a race between the train and Calhoun's coaches. The film's never-take-a-breath action scenes are played out against some of the most gorgeous Colorado scenery ever captured on Technicolor. A Ticket to Tomahawk has achieved latter-day fame due to the unbilled presence of Marilyn Monroe as one of Dan Dailey's chorus gals.
